Many people have heard of a tummy tuck, but aren’t totally sure what it is. In fact, it is surgery to reduce fat and excess skin around the abdomen that also includes firming up and smoothing the muscles in that area. In medical terminology, the procedure is known as abdominoplasty, and it appeals to a great many women who might not even be overweight but hate the look of that abdominal “pouch” they still have after a past pregnancy or losing a substantial amount of weight.

For a “full” tummy tuck, the surgeon makes a long incision along the bottom of the abdomen and then repairs and tightens the underlying abdominal muscles. If necessary, she may make another incision near the belly button in order to remove extra skin in that region as well. She then pulls the upper abdominal skin down, trims the remainder and sutures the skin back together, creating a new belly button in the process.  Finally, she closes the incision by her preferred method (such as sutures or surgical tape). The recovery period for this procedure is usually several weeks.

A “mini” tummy tuck is a less invasive procedure in which one small, easily hidden incision is made and a shorter recovery period is possible. Patients who have only a small amount of excess skin in the lower portion of their abdomen are potential candidates for this procedure.
