Patients diagnosed with severe carotid artery disease have a dangerous build-up of plaque in the artery that delivers blood to their brain, and are at risk of experiencing a transient ischemic attack or full-blown stroke. The surgical procedure for removing that plaque is known as a carotid endarterectomy, and Dr. Astra at Florida Hospital North Pinellas Surgical Institute has performed many of these procedures for residents across the Tampa region in the state-of-the-art operating facilities of Florida Hospital.

A highly experienced vascular surgeon, Dr. Astra carefully evaluates each patient’s condition and medical history to determine if they are a good candidate for the procedure. He may also order a pre-operative cerebral angiogram to help visualize the interior of blood vessels within the head. Carotid endarterectomy is approximately a 2-hour procedure that usually requires only a one-night stay in the hospital and allows for a fairly quick recovery time.

For more information on this specific procedure and whether you or a loved one might be a candidate for it, please contact Florida Hospital North Pinellas Surgical Institute in Tarpon Springs at 727.270.9927 or fill out an appointment request form. Dr. Astra welcomes the opportunity to put his expertise in complex vascular surgery to work for you.
