Atrial fibrillation, or “A-Fib,” is what happens when it feels like your heart is fluttering, skipping a beat or pounding against your chest. In this instance, the upper chambers of the heart are essentially “quivering” rather than beating normally, causing an inadequate flow of blood into and through the ventricles. This slow-down of blood flow can lead to a stroke, cardiac arrest and/or long-term injury to the heart, and needs to be evaluated and treated as quickly as possible. At Florida Hospital North Pinellas Surgical Institute, our resident vascular and thoracic surgeon, Dr. Astra, is well-versed in surgical treatments to address A-fib and regularly receives physician referrals of patients with this disorder and other heart arrhythmias including atrial tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular febrillation.

Dr. Astra is able to help patients with the following conditions via surgical treatments and the placement of cardiac devices including pacemakers. He has an outstanding reputation for his successful treatments and thorough follow-ups with patients, and many area physicians refer their patients with confirmed or suspected heart arrhythmias to his care.
